BC Family Day at Roedde House Museum: Online Sewing Workshop
Learn how to make your own pincushion for your starter sewing kit, using inspiration from authentic Victorian sources! Using a prepackaged kit or items from home, you will learn how to repair and customize sewing projects through this online workshop

This workshop will be facilitated by Amy Walker of ‘Makemobile’, a self-propelled mobile arts and crafts studio which focuses on sociable making whilst primary using natural and reusable materials. Amy will show viewers how to make a simple pincushion for a starter sewing kit, using Victorian designs taken directly from Roedde House Museum’s archival material. During the workshop, Amy will discuss sustainable crafting and repair culture. Viewers will learn basic repair and embroidery skills so that they can create and customize their pincushion or repair and customize other items around the house. The art of visible repairs and the promotion of sustainability will be highlighted and showcased through Victorian examples from Roedde House Museum. The pincushion created by viewers will hopefully inspire them to take on other sewing projects as way to get together as a family, fostering sustainability and creativity.
Craft kits are available for in-person pick up at the Museum starting on Sunday February 20th. Materials in the kits can also be sourced by viewers from around their house or at a local craft store. Each kit will include thread, material scraps, and sewing needles in a keepsake container. The kits will also include a pamphlet/magazine handprinted by Amy Walker with images sourced from Roedde House Museum’s archival materials (which include embroidery books and children’s craft books from the 1800s).
