SUMMARY:Movies at the Museum: Flesh and the Devil (1926)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Victorian parlour to watch the classic 1926 silent film “Flesh & the Devil” starring Greta Garbo\, John Gilbert\, Lars Hanson\, and Barbara Kent. \n\n\n\nFlesh and the Devil was the first of five films in which Greta Garbo co-starred with her real-life lover John Gilbert. Both on and off screen\, theirs was one of Hollywood’s greatest romances. Set in Prussia\, the film is a melodrama of love\, adultery\, duels and retribution\, based on Hermann Sudermann’s 1894 novel ‘The Undying Past’. Davis uses rich scoring with echoes of 19th-century German Romanticism to complement Garbo and Gilbert’s on-screen romance. The glorious love theme\, as heard for instance in the garden scene\, is one of his finest creations. \n\n\n\nFree popcorn provided! \n\n\n\nImportant Info: \n\n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive 10 minutes prior to showtime to secure seats.\n\n\n\nCapacity will be limited to 16 people.\n\n\n\nLimited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. Parking spots are scarce in the neighbourhood\, so give yourself some extra time or use public transportation. (Closest Skytrain station: Burrard. We are on the #5 Robson bus route).

SUMMARY:Movies at the Museum: The Doll (1919) & Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of some classic silent films this October from 7-9pm with The Doll (1919) on Oct 16 and Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (1920) on Oct. 23! \n\n\n\nThe Doll (German: Die Puppe) is a 1919 German romantic fantasy comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Forced into marriage by his uncle\, a man decides to fool him by marrying a life-like mechanical doll instead. The film is based on the operetta La poupée by Edmond Audran (1896) and a line of influence back through the Léo Delibes ballet Coppélia (1870) and ultimately to E. T. A. Hoffmann‘s short story “Der Sandmann” (1816). \n\n\n\nDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a 1920 American silent horror film starring John Barrymore. Set in late Victorian London\, Dr. Henry Jekyll experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden\, dark side of man and releases a murderer from within himself. The film is an adaptation of the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.
