We are pleased to welcome the Ben MacRae Trio featuring Ben MacRae (Tuba\, Clarinet\, Saxophone\, & Voice)\, Strauss Whiteside (Piano)\, and Kayden Gorden (Trumpet).   \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists:  \n\n\n\nBen MacRae is an accomplished clarinet\, saxophone\, flute\, and tuba player who is currently settled in Vancouver\, BC. Originally from the Fraser Valley\, Ben enjoys cooking\, bicycling\, and playing cribbage. Ben received a diploma in Orchestral Performance on the clarinet from KPU in 2017\, and in 2021\, at Capilano University\, Ben obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies\, Performance and Composition.   \n\n\n\nKayden Gorden is a trumpet player\, vocalist\, and composer originally from Chilliwack\, BC\, now residing in Vancouver. He started playing trumpet at the age of 12 and began performing professionally at 15. In 2017\, he was a recipient of a Fraser MacPherson Jazz Fund Award. Kayden’s repertoire predominantly includes traditional New Orleans jazz\, swing\, and pre-bop standards.  \n\n\n\nStrauss Whiteside is a prolific piano teacher and jazz pianist from the South Surrey area of BC. Strauss started his music study at the age of 10 and has devoted his life to the art\, playing in many bands and combos throughout high school and university. In 2021\, Strauss completed his second degree\, a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Music from UBC and has since been hired by the Surrey School District as a band TTOC and has been helping to guide students in their musical journeys and encouraging the next generation.  \n\n\n\nThe concert will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.\, with a 30-minute intermission during which tea and cookies will be available. \n\n\n\n$20 for Seniors/RHM Members/Students \n\n\n\n$23 for General Admission

DESCRIPTION:Erhu & Cello Music\n\n\n\nFeaturing Jun Rong (Erhu) & Bo Peng (Cello)\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for in the Roedde House parlour for Concert in the Parlour – an intimate concert experience in our concert series collaboration with the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra! \n\n\n\nThis November we will be featuring Erhu and Cello music with artists Jun Rong (erhu) and Bo Peng (Cello) \n\n\n\nTea and Cookies will be served at the end of the concert. \n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive no later than 10 minutes before showtime to secure seats.Seating is limited. \n\n\n\nArtist Bios \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJun Rong is an Erhu instructor at Capilano University and teaches the very first Erhu Major in Vancouver. She is also the Vancouver alumni association vice president of the China Conservatory of Music. \n\n\n\nJun has performed with major symphony orchestras in Canada\, such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra\, Victoria Symphony Orchestra\, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently\, Jun performed an erhu concerto with Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vancouver Chinese Cultural Centre invited Jun to be a soloist in collaboration with the internationally renowned Vega String Quartet from New York. Concert critics from the Vancouver Sun newspaper called it “a brilliant Erhu performance.”  \n\n\n\nIn addition to playing traditional Chinese repertoire\, Jun has made many cross-cultural collaborations. As part of the Erhu and Harp Duet\, Jun collaborated with local harpists to develop a unique music style combining Chinese and Western music. The Erhu and Harp Duet performed at many festivals and were invited to perform at the Vancouver World Harp Convention opening ceremony. Jun also played Gaohu and Erhu in the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBo Peng holds a Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of North Texas\, a Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music\, as well as a Performer’s Diploma from the Indiana University where he studied with distinguished cellist Janos Starker. His teachers also included renowned cellists Steven Doane\, Carter Enyeart\, Marc Johnson and Eric Wilson.  \n\n\n\nMr. Peng was a two-time winner of the Music Teacher National Association Competitions (Strings Division); he also won 3rd prize in the International Chamber Music Competition held by the Czech Radio “Spring of Prague”.  \n\n\n\nAs a soloist and chamber musician\, he attended several summer festivals and master classes including International Summer Academy at University Mozarteum (Salzburg\, Austria) on the Johann Strauss Foundation (2002 and 2003)\, the Banff Summer Festival\, the Spoleto Summer Festival\, the Taos Chamber Music Festival and the National Arts Center Young Artists Programme where he worked with world-class musicians such as Lynn Harrell\, Gary Hoffmann\, Aldo Parisot\, Pinchas Zurkermann and the Tokyo String Quartet.  \n\n\n\n— \n\n\n\nAbout VICO: \n\n\n\nSince repertoire for the VICO’s unusual and diverse instrumentation does not already exist\, creating new work is an integral component of all our programming. Developing new commissions (over 50 new Canadian works since 2001\, and counting!) provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other\, in a uniquely collaborative process. We are pleased to welcome “Duologue” Jazz Conversations with Alan Matheson (piano/flugelhorn) and Wynston Minckler (bass). In an intimate duo setting\, Alan and Wynston will present a series of musical conversations via classic jazz compositions (Duke Ellington\, Lil Hardin\, Bix Beiderbecke) along with music from Finland and Estonia (including jazz interpretations of Jean Sibelius). The duo will also perform Alan’s “Baltic Impressions” suite\, a musical portrait of the natural beauty of the Gulf of Finland. \n\n\n\nThe concert will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.\, with a 30-minute intermission during which tea and cookies will be available. \n\n\n\n$20 for Seniors/RHM Members/Students \n\n\n\n$23 for General Admission \n\n\n\nArtist Bios \n\n\n\nAlan Matheson is a Vancouver-based pianist\, trumpeter\, composer and arranger. He teaches at the University of British Columbia School of Music where he is an instructor in jazz piano and trumpet and at the Vancouver Symphony School of Music where he lectures in jazz history and teaches jazz piano and trumpet. Alan has also taught for over thirty years at the Vancouver Community College School of Music (trumpet\, jazz history\, jazz piano and jazz ensembles). Alan also leads his own big band\, nonet\, septet and trio and has written arrangements for jazz legends Clark Terry and Bud Shank. As well\, Alan has conducted big band tributes to Duke Ellington\, Paul Whiteman and Louis Armstrong. \n\n\n\nWynston Minckler has quickly emerged as one of the foremost bassists in the Vancouver and Canadian music scene. His devotion to music began when he was teenager after being exposed to the sounds of 50s and 60s jazz\, the writings of George Orwell\, Phillip K. Dick\, and Jack Kerouac\, and Eastern Philosopy. He is a musical chameleon\, performing in a diverse and eclectic blend of projects ranging from Jazz\, songwriter\, rock\, rnb\, open improv\, and world music. He has performed across Canada at festivals including the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, The North Country Fair\, The Kispiox Music Festival\, Artswells\, and Buscadero Days in Pusiano\, Italy. Wynston has had the opportunity to study with musicans such as Jodi Proznick\, Andre Lechance\, Darren Radtke\, Laurence Mollerup\, and David Brown and is very thankful to have spent time studying music at Capilano University.

Together they explore traditional Persian and Celtic music\, creating beautiful songs and tunes in a unique\, heartfelt presentation that touches audiences from every corner of the globe.  \n\n\n\nArtist Bio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAmir Haghighi was born and raised in Tehran\, Iran. He attended the Center for Preservation and Advancement of Iranian Music\, where he studied traditional music with Master Ata Jankuk. After emigrating to Canada\, Amir studied western classical voice at Capilano University\, and further advanced his traditional Persian avaaz (singing) with Master Hossein Omoumi. Amir was featured\, along with his wife Amy\, as a composer and performer in the award-winning documentary “Music for a New World”\, and he has been a featured soloist at international festivals and conferences\, as well as with choirs across Canada.  \n\n\n\nAmy Stephen grew up surrounded by Scottish bagpipes and family sing-alongs\, and has played traditional Celtic music for most of her life. Her instruments include Celtic harp\, piano\, accordion & penny whistle\, and she sings traditional songs as well. A composer and arranger as well as a performer\, Amy was a founder of acclaimed Canadian celtic band Mad Pudding. She is a busy studio musician playing on soundtracks and recording projects\, and she loves to collaborate with other traditional musicians.  \n\n\n\nRex Haghighi\, Amir & Amy’s son\, grew up in BC and has become an internationally known producer and performer of electronic dance music with the handle Angel Cannon. He has composed and performed music for Alexander McQueen\, Bally of Switzerland and J.M. Weston. William has played as the pianist in residence for boutique hotels and private members clubs – The Hotel Amour in Paris\, Quo Vadis in London’s Soho. \n\n\n\nRoss McCrae (double bass)\, is a multi-instrumentalist\, currently studying jazz performance at Capilano University. His acoustic trio ‘Gradient’ made their debut at the Surrey Jazz Festival where they were awarded best combo they have since performed at the Vancouver Jazz Festival. DESCRIPTION:Pulse Tide\n\n\n\nFeaturing Liam Hockley\n\n\n\n\n\nModern music meets historical setting for a unique concert experience to kick off the year’s concert series collaboration with the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra! \n\n\n\nTea and Cookies will be served at the end of the concert. \n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive no later than 10 minutes before showtime to secure seats.Seating is limited. \n\n\n\nProgram Details: \n\n\n\nPulse-Tide is a 50-minute set for basset horn and four-channel playback\, curated to unfold as a single\, evening-length concert experience. The four pieces expand in scale from a solo basset horn to a septet\, gradually enveloping the audience in a shimmering world of acoustic and electronic sound. The program takes its name from Hockley’s album Pulse Tide\, released on Aural Terrains and selected by The Wire as one of the Top 10 Modern Composition albums of 2024. This concert version reimagines works from the album for live performance. \n\n\n\nThe program begins in the jagged landscape of Ana-Maria Avram’s Penumbra\, the solo basset horn tracing the spectral language that carries through the program. Through interference beating caused by close dissonances\, Still and Moving Lines of Silence in Families of Hyperbolas draws attention to the physical manifestation of sound physically. Thanos Chrysakis’ Egress—written for Liam Hockley in 2017 and receiving its world premiere performance tonight—is a dense\, polyphonic piece for five basset horns that exploits the instrument’s extended range and rich multiphonics capabilities. \n\n\n\nThe cornerstone of the program is Horațiu Rădulescu’s Capricorn’s Nostalgic Crickets\, an open-score work for seven identical woodwinds\, heard here in a new realization for basset horns and electronics. The piece unfolds as a stream of 96 sound “events” spanning over five octaves of overlapping multiphonics\, overtones\, voices\, and electronics. As each of these sonic events emerges from and returns to silence\, the effect of a living\, breathing body of sound is created: a hypnotic and trance-like “implacable DEEP CONTINUITY … a PULSE-TIDE of MUSIC and SILENCE.” \n\n\n\nArtist Bio \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLiam Hockley \n\n\n\nA versatile musician for whom “alternative or avant-garde approaches to his instrument are only part of the everyday tool kit” (Georgia Straight)\, clarinetist Liam Hockley is a dedicatedadvocate for new and experimental music. Among other accolades\, Liam holds an interpretation prize from the Stockhausen–Konzert und –Kurse Kürten. He has performed as a soloist or ensemble member on three continents\, including recent concert engagements with Vancouver New Music\, Salt New Music Festival and Symposium (Victoria)\, Neuztec (Victoria)\, Music on Main\, KLANGRAUM (Düsseldorf)\, and NUNC (Evanston\, IL). Liam’s debut album\, Pulse Tide\, was listed by The Wire as one of 2024’s top 10 Modern Composition releases. Liam has also recorded for Redshift and CMC Centrediscs and has published in The Clarinet and Foci Arts/Words. Over the past five years\, Arvind has honed his craft alongside some of Canada’s top jazz musicians\, including Brad Turner\, Sharon Minemoto\, John Gross\, Cory Weeds\, Steve Holy\, Steve Kaldestad\, and Jillian Lebeck to name a few. \n\n\n\nNoah Franche-Nolan is a Canadian pianist\, improviser\, composer\, and arranger based in Vancouver BC. \n\n\n\nHe leads the Noah Franche-Nolan Trio\, with Juno-Nominated Jodi Proznick on bass and Nicholas Bracewell on drums. This band is releasing its debut album on the Cellar Live Record Label on Sept 15\, 2023. This band also forms the rhythm section for Indo Jazz Fusion group Raagaverse\, led by Shruti Ramani. She discovered an interest in sound and technology during her involvement as a programmer with Sonic UBC Laptop Sounds and Sensors (SUBCLASS) where she worked alongside other musicians and dancers in composing for interactive media art performance works. Since then\, Andrea has worked in sound design for interactive media including virtual reality games and interactive installations\, as well as fixed media such as short animations and live performances including electroacoustic operas at various Canadian festivals. Her passion and curiosities have led her in a pursuit of using technology to create meaningful and accessible immersive experiences. Andrea’s current musical practice is focussed on creating sincere relationships and unique dialogues through free improvisation. She can be found performing on a Chinese guzheng augmented with computer electronics\, and hosting her regular community series Improv Karaoke. We hope that through this concert series you will be introduced to a diversity of musical instruments and styles reflective of the diversity of the Canadian experience as well as a new appreciation of different types of classical music! \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be provided.  \n\n\n\nThis month’s concert features traditional Iranian & Armenian music performed by Ramin Jamalpour on piano and Sina Ettehad on the Kamancheh (Iranian Spike Fiddle). Experience a selection of original repertoire\, as well as Iranian and Armenian folk songs arranged by Ramin and Iraj Sahbayi. The performance will include improvised connecting sections and mood painting\, adding depth and texture to the music. We hope this performance opens new worlds to you as we continue our exploration of Music of the World! \n\n\n\nArtist Bios \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRamin Jamalpour – Piano \n\n\n\nComposer\, pianist\, and artist\, Ramin holds an ARCT Diploma in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music with First Class Honors and a Bachelor in Visual Arts. He was a pianist of the Tehran Symphonic Orchestra and Choir\, Radio and Television Choir in Tehran for ten years. \n\n\n\nFrom 1996 to 2000\, he completed composing and conducting courses under Prof. Aghajanian\, Altounian\, and Moradian in Armenia. At the same time he had several piano recitals\, one of them recorded and broadcasted on the German Television network. \n\n\n\nHis performances include recitals and concerts in Vancouver\, Ottawa\, Toronto\, Los Angeles\, and Tehran. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, he published 12 virtuoso pieces for piano; this year\, he has published a collection of 14 Iranian Folk songs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSina Ettehad – Violin\, Kamancheh\, Composition \n\n\n\nSina Ettehad began his musical journey at the age of 12\, learning violin and music theory under the guidance of Master Atabaki. Four years later\, he delved into the ancient Iranian fiddle\, the Kamancheh\, studying with Master Ardeshir Kamkar. After moving to Canada\, Sina continued his musical education at Vancouver Community College (VCC). As a core member of the Gomaan Ensemble\, Sina is actively involved in several musical groups\, including the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, Kereshmeh Ensemble\, and Zaryab Ensemble\, which fuse Persian and Flamenco styles. He also plays in the Wind Band\, known for its blend of Jazz and Middle Eastern music. Over the past eight years\, Sina has composed and performed for various film and theatre productions. A significant milestone in his career came in 2010\, when he and the Kereshmeh Ensemble performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra — marking the first collaboration of a Persian ensemble with the VSO. This concert featured the renowned Iranian singer Ali Reza Ghorbani and received outstanding reviews. Shortly thereafter\, Sina and the Kereshmeh Ensemble toured Canada\, concluding with two live recording sessions for CBC. In recent years\, Sina has initiated a fusion music series called “Fusik.” He is also passionate about teaching and currently offers lessons at his private studio in North Vancouver. \n\n\n\nAbout Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO): \n\n\n\nThe Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, founded in 2001\, was one of the first professional concert orchestras devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently the only ensemble of its kind in Canada\, and one of only a handful that exist in the world. The VICO brings together musicians and composers from many cultural and artistic communities in the Greater Vancouver area\, including Chinese\, Taiwanese\, Japanese\, Indian\, Persian (Iranian)\, Latin and South American\, Vietnamese\, African\, North American and European. The ensemble includes Western strings and winds (violin\, viola\, cello\, contrabass\, oboe\, flute\, clarinet) alongside Chinese erhu\, sanxian\, zheng\, and sheng/suona; Persian kamanche\, tar/setar\, and tombak; Vietnamese dan bau; percussion from many world music traditions; and a variety of other instruments as required. \n\n\n\nSince repertoire for the VICO’s unusual and diverse instrumentation does not already exist\, creating new work is an integral component of all our programming. Developing new commissions (over 50 new Canadian works since 2001\, and counting!) provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other\, in a uniquely collaborative process. We build bridges of imagination. We approach diversity as a fascinating challenge and a creative call to action. We create and perform music that transcends borders and breaks down barriers\, modeling a pathway for integrating non-Western traditional instruments\, sounds and techniques into contemporary Canadian classical music. \n\n\n\nSince its inaugural performance in 2001\, the VICO has developed and performed over 50 new intercultural pieces by ground-breaking Canadian composers such as Elliot Weisgarber\, Trichy Sankaran\,Jin Zhang\, Mark Armanini\, Farshid Samandari\, Moshe Denburg\, Nikki Carter\, Ed Henderson\, Larry Nickel\, Jeffrey Ryan\, Rita Ueda\, Lisa Cay Miller\, Jim Hiscott\,   Lan Tung\, Michael O’Neill\, John Oliver\, Grace Lee\, Neil Weisensel\, Joseph “Pepe” Danza\,  Niel Golden\, Stephen Chatman\, Rodney Sharman\, Dorothy Chang\, Neelamjit Dhillon\, Jennifer Butler\, Kara Gibbs\, and Leslie Uyeda. \n\n\n\nReminders: \n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive no later than 10 minutes before showtime to secure seats.Seating is limited. \n\n\n\nParking: \n\n\n\nLimited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. This band is releasing its debut album on the Cellar Live Record Label on Sept 15\, 2023. This band also forms the rhythm section for Indo Jazz Fusion group Raagaverse\, led by Shruti Ramani. In addition to being a performer and bandleader\, Franche-Nolan is an active composer\, having most recently composed the score to NYC film maker Talha Jalal’s documentary “Rite of Passage” and the music for Vancouver-based playwright Shelby Saitterthwaite’s play Light Rapid Transit. We hope that through this concert series you will be introduced to a diversity of musical instruments and styles reflective of the diversity of the Canadian experience as well as a new appreciation of different types of classical music! \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be provided.  \n\n\n\nJoin us for the return of the delightful Persian Origins Trio as they return again to Roedde House. Delicate melodies with a profusion of  ornamentation give the listener a window into an ancient world where these instruments would be played in private\, away from the public eye. Persian Origins audibly demonstrate Persian traditional instruments are the forefathers  of the piano (Santour) and guitar (Tar) and the program presented  shows many facets of musical character similar to western music from the baroque era:  in range\, in dynamics and in deeply personal thoughts being played out in transparent intimate detail. \n\n\n\nArtist Bios \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaina Khaledi – Santour \n\n\n\nSaina Khaledi was the winner of the Iranian Santour Festival in 2003. She received her diploma from Iran’s most prestigious music school\, the Tehran Music Conservatoire. She continued her studies and graduated in Music (Bachelors of Arts) from the Tehran Music University in 2007\, at which point she studiedwith Masters: Mr. Nasrollah Khaledi\, Mrs. Soosan Aslani (Dehlavi)\, and Mrs. Arfa Atraei. Saina has performed in Iran\, Austria\, Japan\, Netherlands\, USA and Canada often as a composer\, soloist or with groups such as Music On Main\, Vashaan Ensemble\, The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO)\, BC Chinese Music Ensemble (BCCME)\, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO)\, Vancouver Opera Orchestra\, Richmond choir\, Medusa Society\, National Orchestra of Iran Conservatoire\, Mellal Orchestra and Hamnavazan Ensemble. Shealso took part in different music productions and recordings. She currently teaches Santour at Capilano University\, Persian Culture and art institute (Percai)\, Nazanin Academy\, as well as private lessons. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAli Razmi – Tar \n\n\n\nAli Razmi is a gifted tar and setar player who received his Master’s Degree in music from The Art University Of Tehran in 2006. Since his arrival to Canada in 2007\, he has been a roster member of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, and has done workshops and concerts with well-known musicians from all around the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAli Sajjadi – Oud \n\n\n\nAli Sajjadi is an Iranian-Canadian oud player based in Vancouver BC. He has been studying setar and oud since the 1990s and has had joyful collaborations with great local and international musicians. Ali has dedicated a portion of his musical career towards Persian folk music\, participating in various festivals\, live performances and recordings with renowned musicians worldwide. In 2004 he published a book titled“10pieces for Barbat”\, for advanced barbat and oud players. Oud is what Ali loves; this instrument is played in a number of countries with diverse cultures and backgrounds; he believes the peaceful and magical sound of oud is a unifying element bridging all these deep\, rich cultures. \n\n\n\nAbout Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO): \n\n\n\nThe Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, founded in 2001\, was one of the first professional concert orchestras devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently the only ensemble of its kind in Canada\, and one of only a handful that exist in the world. The VICO brings together musicians and composers from many cultural and artistic communities in the Greater Vancouver area\, including Chinese\, Taiwanese\, Japanese\, Indian\, Persian (Iranian)\, Latin and South American\, Vietnamese\, African\, North American and European. The ensemble includes Western strings and winds (violin\, viola\, cello\, contrabass\, oboe\, flute\, clarinet) alongside Chinese erhu\, sanxian\, zheng\, and sheng/suona; Persian kamanche\, tar/setar\, and tombak; Vietnamese dan bau; percussion from many world music traditions; and a variety of other instruments as required. \n\n\n\nSince repertoire for the VICO’s unusual and diverse instrumentation does not already exist\, creating new work is an integral component of all our programming. Developing new commissions (over 50 new Canadian works since 2001\, and counting!) provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other\, in a uniquely collaborative process. We build bridges of imagination. This September\, we are pleased to welcome Nebyoha (voice\, trombone\, Guitar\, electronics) with Madeleine Elkins (Guitar)\, and Róisín Adams (Keys) to our Jazz in the Parlour concert series. \n\n\n\nThe concert will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.\, with a 30-minute intermission during which tea and cookies will be available. \n\n\n\n$20 for Seniors/RHM Members/Students \n\n\n\n$23 for General Admission \n\n\n\nWith thanks to support from a Metro Vancouver Cultural Grant to help make this and other jazz concerts in our series possible. \n\n\n\nNebyoha Artist Bio: \n\n\n\nBorn in Vancouver\, Nebyu Yohannes began playing guitar and drums in church\, eventually moving to the trombone in the seventh grade and pursuing through to post-secondary\, where he moved to Toronto to study music at Humber College.  \n\n\n\nFrom being exposed to Motown\, rock\, and traditional Ethiopian music as a young boy\, to discovering jazz\, R&B\, and classical in his college years\, Nebyu has digested a diverse artistic palette from which to draw from when creating. In June of 2016\, he released his first project entitled “Nebyu Yohannes EP\,” a work dedicated to three original contemporary jazz compositions. Following the release\, new pieces began to emerge\, showcasing his diverse artistry\, such as the release of the original classical piece “Heaven on Earth” in 2017\, and two indie-r&b songs\, “Danger” and “All These Years” in 2019\, revealing his abilities as a singer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and producer. In April of 2021\, Nebyu released “Silhouette of Yesteryear\,” a 3-track EP diving into his most vulnerable moments of 2020. \n\n\n\nNebyu has performed alongside many great Canadian and international musicians including Take 6\, Michael McDonald\, Martha Reeves\, Quique Escamilla\, and Vox Sambou. \n\n\n\nMadeleine Elkins Artist Bio: \n\n\n\nMadeleine Elkins has been playing guitar for over 12 years. In that time she has completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Studies at Capilano University\, plays in a variety of bands and is a private guitar teacher. She currently gigs regularly around Vancouver and is a contributing member of jazz-influenced group “Spindle!” and indie-rock band “Porteau.” She is a passionate musician and educator and looks to her female role models for inspiration. \n\n\n\nRóisín Adams Artist Bio: \n\n\n\nClassically trained pianist/composer Róisín Adams’ artistic interests lie at the fertile intersection of composed and improvised music\, as well as in bold interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists\, poets\, puppeteers\, filmmakers and contemporary dance artists.

Donations collected will go towards the continuation of our programming and directly supports the artists we engage. \n\n\n\nMORE ABOUT THE FEATURED ENSEMBLE\n\n\n\nSILK ROAD MUSIC \n\n\n\nAs recently as the mid-1990s\, stereotypes of Chinese music as atonal and inaccessible dominated “mainstream” North Americans’ perceptions of this country’s sound. The idea of blending Chinese music with popular Western styles was seen as absurd\, if not impossible. Silk Road Music changed all that. The ensemble pioneered the kind of Chinese-Western musical fusions that one now hears in acts ranging from The Sparrow Quartet to Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road project. \n\n\n\nAt the heart of Silk Road Music is the unstoppable artistic vision of its founder\, Qiu Xia He\, a one-time music teacher at China’s Xian Academy of Music and professional pipa player with the Shaanxi Music and Dance troupe. While performing with the ensemble at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival\, she made the dramatic decision to stay in Canada\, and was welcomed in by a household of Irish musicians on Hornby Island. It was there that the seeds of her extraordinary cross-cultural musical experimentations were planted. \n\n\n\nQiu Xia founded Silk Road Music in 1991 with two other B.C.-based Chinese musicians: erhu player Shirley Yuan and zheng player Li Zhou\, later replaced by ruan player Zhimin Yu. From the very beginning\, the goal was to create a new musical hybrid born of its members’ dual experiences in China and Canada. The ensemble blended Chinese folk and classical music with Celtic\, Latin\, Arabic\, Aboriginal\, jazz\, and blues music. It developed two exciting educational programs to bring world music to school children\, and in 2001\, it created a groundbreaking recording and performance project that paired Chinese and European-Canadian vocalists for bilingual duets of Chinese folk songs. Sung by Danie Friesen in English\, French and German\, this show will feature classic Weill tunes as well as rarely heard Weill works with new arrangements by Noah Franche-Nolan. Accompanied by Conrad Good on double bass\, and Noah Franche-Nolan on Piano.  \n\n\n\nDanie Friesen Bio: \n\n\n\nWith a background in theatre and film\, Canadian actor/soprano Danie Friesen’s range of professional experience reflects an artist who transcends barriers and is active in creating and performing new works. In 2012\, she co-founded Art & Lies Productions\, an independent theatre company focused on producing stylized\, physical and absurdist theatre. Danie is the founder of Opera Revue\, an indie opera company based in Toronto that specializes in bringing opera\, art song and musical theatre into casual settings\, such as bars and nightclubs\, making opera accessible to new audiences. \n\n\n\nRecent roles include: Linfea (La Calisto)\, Zerlina (Don Giovanni)\, Despina (Cosi Fan Tutte)\, Ria Krauss (In Adagio)\, Leonato (Much Ado About Nothing)\, Kate (Pirates of Penzance)\, Charmian (Antony and Cleopatra)\, Estelle (No Exit) and Nancy (Oliver!).   \n\n\n\nDanie is the vocalist for Flowers of Hell\, a trans-Atlantic experimental orchestra\, and recently performed with them at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow and Tate Britain in London\, as well as shows in Berlin and Prague. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy world music from the Vancouver Inter-cultural Orchestra live on the Roedde House porch!  \n\n\n\nCome join us outdoors on the Roedde House porch on Sunday July 7th from 4-6 pm with a free performance by The Tzimmes Trio from Vancouver Inter-cultural Orchestra.  \n\n\n\nOriginal in concept and sound\, Tzimmes (pronounced: tsi’- mess)\, occupies a niche of its own in Jewish Music. Over the 35 years of its existence\, they have concertized in Canada\, the U.S.\, Mexico\, and England\, at Folk Festivals and Communal Events\, for Jewish and non-Jewish audiences alike. Tzimmes has always been committed to presenting Jewish Music in its many facets – everything from Middle Eastern (Mizrahi/Hebrew) to Eastern European (Klezmer/Yiddish) to Mediterranean (Sephardi/Ladino)\, and contemporary musical vernaculars. New settings of traditional repertoire alternate with completely original creations.The concert trio consists of:Moshe Denburg – Lead Vocal\, Guitar\, Band LeaderYona Bar-Sever – Electric Bass\, Guitar\, Vocals\, Hand PercussionSaul Berson – Saxophone\, Clarinet\, Flute —–Moshe Denburg (Voice\, Guitar\, Band Leader)\, originally from Montreal\, came to the west coast in 1982. He has traveled and studied music worldwide\, including Israel\, where he lived for 7 years. He has been a musician all his life\, singing and songwriting in Jewish and Middle Eastern idioms extensively. He is an accomplished composer\, and his works have been performed\, recorded\, and broadcast all over the world. As Composer/Arranger for Tzimmes\, Moshe has given the group its overall musical direction since its inception. \n\n\n\nYona Bar-Sever (E. Bass\, Guitar\, Voice\, Djembe) was born and raised in Jerusalem\, Israel\, where he was a much sought after Bass player. For a number of years he earned his livelihood playing nightly at the prestigious Khan Club in Jerusalem\, accompanying in a wide variety of styles\, from Rock to Hassidic to Middle Eastern to Israeli Folk. He moved to Canada in 1975 and has lived in Vancouver ever since. Today he divides his time between music making and personal counselling. Whether on Guitar\, Electric Bass\, Vocals\, or Hand Drums\, his Salonikan roots lend Tzimmes a Mediterranean and Sephardic mood. \n\n\n\nSaul Berson (Alto Sax\, Clarinet\, Flute) is a multi-instrumentalist who has been exploring an extensive array of stylistic ground for the past 25 years. His musical abilities span a wide range\, and include klezmer\, jazz\, and inter-cultural music. A core member of Tzimmes\, Saul lends to the band a tremendously versatile instrumental resource. He is an accomplished jazz composer as well\, having released several highly acclaimed albums. \n\n\n\nThe Tzimmes Story Tzimmes had its humble beginnings in 1986 in Victoria\, B.C.\, and for about 4 years played for enthusiastic audiences within and outside the Jewish community. They bid adieu to each other in 1990\, but as mazl (luck) would have it\, two of its members\, namely Moshe Denburg and Julian Siegel\, moved to Vancouver. In the fall of 1991\, together with a longtime friend of Moshe’s from Jerusalem\, Yona Bar- Sever\, Tzimmes was re-formed. Soon after they were joined by Vocalist Myrna Rabinowitz\, and Egyptian Percussionist\, the late Adel Awad. Over the past decade the Tzimmes family has been expanded to include several more outstanding musicians – Phil Belanger on Drums\, Saul Berson on Saxophone\, Clarinet\, & Flute\, Doug Stephenson on Bass\, and Amy Stephen on Accordion & Keyboard. \n\n\n\nDefinition of a TzimmesTzimmes (pronounced: tsi’- mess)\, is a Yiddish word for a sweet culinary concoction made variously of stewed carrots\, honey\, raisins\, and prunes; it is considered to be the perfect complement to the main course of a Jewish feast. In another\, more humorous connection\, Jewish people are warned not to complicate a simple matter\, with the adage: “Don’t make me a big Tzimmes!” (It is safe to say that the warning is usually ignored!).Read more on their website: www.tzimmes.net \n\n\n\nThe performers will be on the side porch of Roedde House Museum which faces the lawn space of Barclay Heritage Square Park. DESCRIPTION:Jazz heads outdoors for our Jazz on the Porch summer series\, starting Tuesday June 27th at 7pm! \n\n\n\nZhambai at Roedde House Museum\n\n\n\nFeaturing Curtis Andrews and Kurai Mubaiwa\n\n\n\nJoin us for a captivating musical experience featuring Curtis Andrews and Kurai Mubaiwa\, performing as Zhambai. This dynamic duo will take you on a rhythmic journey through the traditional and contemporary sounds of Zimbabwe’s Shona people\, centered around the ancient mbira (thumb piano). \n\n\n\nCurtis Andrews\, based in Vancouver\, BC\, is a multifaceted drummer\, composer\, and ethnomusicologist. Originally from Carbonear\, Newfoundland\, Curtis began his musical journey at 14 by teaching himself to play the drumset. His deep curiosity for rhythm\, culture\, and spirit led him to study the musical traditions of Ghana and South India extensively\, under the mentorship of renowned artists including his mridangam guru\, Trichy Sankaran. Curtis holds a BFA from York University and a PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia. He co-leads a Ghanaian drum and dance ensemble\, collaborates with diverse musicians across various genres\, and leads his own Afro-Indian-World-Jazz group. His work with Kurai Mubaiwa brings the hypnotic and spiritual music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe to audiences\, blending traditional and contemporary compositions. Curtis resides on the unceded territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations\, and is passionate about fostering love\, understanding\, and excitement for life through music. \n\n\n\nKurai Mubaiwa is one of Canada’s leading mbira players. The mbira\, an ancient thumb piano\, has been used for spiritual purposes in Zimbabwe for centuries. Its sound is reminiscent of water dropping\, spirits talking\, ancestors singing\, and blood pumping. Kurai has mastered both the traditional repertoire and composes his own contemporary music for the mbira. In Curtis Andrews\, he has found an able and willing ally. As a duo\, these multifaceted musicians bring a message of joy and healing to themselves and their audience alike. \n\n\n\nThe performers will be on the side porch of Roedde House Museum\, which faces the lawn space of Barclay Heritage Square Park. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the parlour of Roedde House Museum as we take chamber music back to its originally intended intimate setting. We hope that through this concert series you will be introduced to a diversity of musical instruments and styles reflective of the diversity of the Canadian experience as well as a new appreciation of different types of classical music! Refreshments will be served in the dining room at the end of the concert. \n\n\n\nOur June VICO: Music of the World concert series will see the return of Water Dragon Music: Classic Chinese Poetry & Music which premiered at Roedde House in 2023. This enchanting fusion of modern classical music\, traditional Chinese instruments\, and ancient poetry transforms the Roedde Parlour into another world entirely\, so don’t sleep on it if you missed its debut last year!Program Description:  \n\n\n\nWater Dragon Tune is from an ongoing collection of Chinese poems set to music by L. Mark Armanini. The power of these ancient poems is in the common and daily experiences being shared between the time they were written (347-1200 AD)\, and the present. The music\, for the most part is contemplative\, the Mandarin text is reflected and framed by the erhu in a dialogue of text image being shadowed by the erhu melodies and emotions. The celestial harp adds a sense of the suspension of time and space\, drawing the listener closer to the rich sounds of the spoken Mandarin with its natural tonal inflections. The effect is to bring the poems into the here and now\, as if the poet is speaking directly to us from ancient times.  \n\n\n\nAbout Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO): \n\n\n\nThe Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra (VICO)\, founded in 2001\, was one of the first concert orchestras devoted to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. It is currently one of only a handful of such professional ensembles that exist in the world. The VICO brings together musicians and composers from many cultural and artistic communities in the Greater Vancouver area\, including Chinese\, Taiwanese\, Japanese\, Indian\, Persian (Iranian)\, Latin and South American\, Vietnamese\, African\, North American and European to create what has been described as “the United Nations of Music” (CBC Radio)\, and “music that sounds like Vancouver looks” (The Georgia Straight). The Vancouver Sun has called VICO “a world music super-group.” \n\n\n\nVICO strives to be a fresh and relevant voice in the contemporary music of our city\, our province and our country. The ensemble builds bridges of imagination\, approaching diversity as a fascinating challenge and a creative call to action. Its work is to make connections\, between performers and audiences of all ages and backgrounds\, across the Lower Mainland\, throughout Canada and the world; to create and perform orchestral music that transcends boundaries: cultural\, social\, political\, geographical.
