SUMMARY:Movies at the Museum: Flesh and the Devil (1926)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in our Victorian parlour to watch the classic 1926 silent film “Flesh & the Devil” starring Greta Garbo\, John Gilbert\, Lars Hanson\, and Barbara Kent. \n\n\n\nFlesh and the Devil was the first of five films in which Greta Garbo co-starred with her real-life lover John Gilbert. Both on and off screen\, theirs was one of Hollywood’s greatest romances. Set in Prussia\, the film is a melodrama of love\, adultery\, duels and retribution\, based on Hermann Sudermann’s 1894 novel ‘The Undying Past’. Davis uses rich scoring with echoes of 19th-century German Romanticism to complement Garbo and Gilbert’s on-screen romance. The glorious love theme\, as heard for instance in the garden scene\, is one of his finest creations. \n\n\n\nFree popcorn provided! \n\n\n\nImportant Info: \n\n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive 10 minutes prior to showtime to secure seats.\n\n\n\nCapacity will be limited to 16 people.\n\n\n\nLimited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. Parking spots are scarce in the neighbourhood\, so give yourself some extra time or use public transportation. (Closest Skytrain station: Burrard. We are on the #5 Robson bus route).

SUMMARY:VICO Concert in the Parlour
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Roedde House for a Concert in the Parlour – an intimate concert experience in our concert series collaboration with the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra! \n\n\n\nThis April we will be featuring Farshid Samandari and Sina Ettehad who will perform a selection of their original repertoire\, as well as folk songs. The performance will include improvised connecting sections and mood painting\, adding depth and texture to the music. \n\n\n\nTea and Cookies will be served at the end of the concert. \n\n\n\nTicket holders should arrive no later than 10 minutes before showtime to secure seats.Seating is limited. \n\n\n\nArtist Bios: \n\n\n\nFarshid Samandari was born in Iran in 1971 into a Bahà’i family. This meant that he was not allowed to pursue academic studies in a university\, was not allowed to leave the country as other citizens\, and in general was deprived of basic human rights. He witnessed the imprisonment\, tribulation\, and martyrdom of many friends and scholars. It took him about nine years to legally obtain a passport to leave his homeland. Notwithstanding these conditions he pursued his music studies\, eventually teaching\, and founding a choir. In April 2001 he arrived in Canada where he continued his studies in composition and electroacoustics at UBC. His music reflects his interest in contemporary classical vocabulary\, spectral analysis\, and extended techniques. In addition his profound faith in unity and diversity has stirred him to utilize elements from a variety of non-western musical traditions\, and integrate different cultural music and vocabularies in his compositions. This vision has directed him to collaborate with a variety of choirs and ensembles including Tehran National Symphony Orchestra\, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra\, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, and many others. His Apogee for the flute received an award from Vancouver New Music 06; other half\, an aria from his upcoming chamber opera SunarcanuS\, was awarded CUMS09 best composition; and coming home\, a trio for flute\, double bass and percussion\, won CUMS/CLC11. \n\n\n\nSina Ettehad began his musical journey at the age of 12\, learning violin and music theory under the guidance of Master Atabaki. Four years later\, he delved into the ancient Iranian fiddle\, the Kamancheh\, studying with Master Ardeshir Kamkar. After moving to Canada\, Sina continued his musical education at Vancouver Community College (VCC). As a core member of the Gomaan Ensemble\, Sina is actively involved in several musical groups\, including the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra\, Kereshmeh Ensemble\, and Zaryab Ensemble\, which fuse Persian and Flamenco styles. He also plays in the Wind Band\, known for its blend of Jazz and Middle Eastern music. Over the past eight years\, Sina has composed and performed for various film and theatre productions. A significant milestone in his career came in 2010\, when he and the Kereshmeh Ensemble performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra—marking the first collaboration of a Persian ensemble with the VSO. This concert featured the renowned Iranian singer Ali Reza Ghorbani and received outstanding reviews. Shortly thereafter\, Sina and the Kereshmeh Ensemble toured Canada\, concluding with two live recording sessions for CBC. In recent years\, Sina has initiated a fusion music series called “Fusik.” He is also passionate about teaching and currently offers lessons at his private studio in North Vancouver. \n\n\n\nAbout VICO: \n\n\n\nSince repertoire for the VICO’s unusual and diverse instrumentation does not already exist\, creating new work is an integral component of all our programming. Developing new commissions (over 50 new Canadian works since 2001\, and counting!) provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other\, in a uniquely collaborative process. Since its inaugural performance in 2001\, the VICO has developed and performed over 50 new intercultural pieces by ground-breaking Canadian composers. For more info: http://vi-co.org \n\n\n\nParking: \n\n\n\nLimited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. Parking spots are scarce in the neighbourhood\, so give yourself some extra time or use public transportation. (Closest Skytrain station: Burrard. SUMMARY:Mountain Girls: From Barclay Street to Bralorne
DESCRIPTION:A Musical & Literary Performance inspired by real life events \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis musical and literary performance takes you on a journey from the dirty thirties in Vancouver to a boom town in BC’s interior mountains. Money\, mystery\, music and a little magic transform lives of women whose stories of adventure and resilience still resonate today. \n\n\n\nTea & cookies will be served after the event. \n\n\n\nSynopsisDuring the 1930’s many people were struggling. In the city of Vancouver rooming houses were one of the ways to survive a depression in the economy & Roedde House was one of these. The women who lived here were artists\, musicians\, writers\, teachers and secretaries. They organized book discussions and political actions to improve lives for women. Many amazing women you will come to know more about came through Roedde House\, living in the West End and walking these same streets we now enjoy. The times were difficult and new opportunities beckoned\, in the mountains and mining towns of Pioneer and Bralorne. Jobs and new adventures drew the women to risk new lives. These are some of their stories. Inspired by real life events.  \n\n\n\nHistory of BralorneBralorne is a historic Canadian gold mining community in the Bridge River District of British Columbia\, some 130 km on dirt roads west of the town of Lillooet. Gold was the lifeblood of the Bridge River Valley for more than 75 years. Bralorne was at the heart of the hard rock mining activity from the late 1800s to the early 1970s. More than 10\,000 men and women worked in the mines before the rising cost of production closed the operations.  \n\n\n\nFEATURING: \n\n\n\nNorah Ashmore\, writer and producer\, has always sought out stories of women from the 1930s. Interviews\, diaries\, letters\, phone books\, newspapers and novels all contributed to the creation of this perforamcne. There are many similarities between these women’s lives and the times we are experiencing now.“I am fortunate to share their stories with Laura and Sharon playing a vital part in the telling. Musicians are artists who collaborate\, support one another\, and create beauty from life’s trials and triumphs.” \n\n\n\nLaura Crema is a distinguished Canadian jazz vocalist celebrated for her deeply expressie voice. Her artistry is informed by over 25 years as a dancer and somatic educator. Laura is dedicated to helping people of all backgrounds express themselves with joy and communicate more fully through the power of song. https://www.instagram.com/crema_laura/ \n\n\n\nSharon Minemoto has been captivating audiences since the age of 16\, building a career as a pianist\, composer\, band leader and educator.
