Academy of Oddities: Dark Art Classes

A series of spooky-themed art workshops at Roedde House Museum, facilitated by artist, Jo Lepeska of Pretty Dead Taxidermy!

The workshops will take place inside Roedde House Museum, the historic 1893 restored home of Vancouver’s first bookbinder, Gustav Roedde. Lessons include a short lecture about the evening’s subject, a presentation on methods, and hands-on mentoring.

  • Art supplies will be provided. 
  • Masks are mandatory inside the museum.
  • Pre-purchase of sessions online is required.
  • Each session is $85, or bundle and save: purchase 2 sessions for $150 or purchase all 4 sessions for $275.
  • Small selection of curated oddities will be available for purchase at each session.


Session 1 

October 5th 7-9pm 

The Ugly and Beautiful

Moths and Butterflies : learn about their strange and unusual behaviour while drawing with coloured pencils from framed specimens. With Pretty Dead Taxidermy’s own bug expert and the owner of Paper Nest.

October 12th 7 -9pm 

The Beautiful and Poisonous 

Plants that can kill you: admire poisonous flora and fauna while diving into their fabulous colours and textures with watercolours. With Kara Gilbert of Astral Eye and Raven’s Veil.

October 19th 7- 9pm 

Sketching with Skulls Anatomical Sketching: learn anatomical sketching using charcoal and graphite while staring into real animal skulls. With  Pretty Dead Taxidermy’s own “bone boy” Aram Horozian.

October 26th 7 – 9pm 

Unusual SpecimensWet Specimens: stare into unusual jars of wet specimens and learn about this decades-old preservation method while drawing with wax pencils. With Pretty Dead Taxidermy’ founder, Jo Lepeska.
