As St. Patrick’s Day approaches, embrace the spirit of the Emerald Isle with this unique opportunity to witness the beauty of Ireland through the lens of early filmmaking. Don’t miss your chance to step back in time and celebrate the legacy of Kalem Films on the silver screen. Mark your calendars and join us for an unforgettable cinematic journey!

The Kalem Film Company ventured east to Ireland while most studios were heading west to Hollywood, earning them the nickname- the O’Kalems. Enjoy the rich history and cultural significance of these rare cinematic treasures meticulously preserved by the Irish Film Archive and Trinity College. Join us as we showcase three captivating films shot in Ireland during the 1910s, transporting you to a bygone era of cinematic magic. 


You Remember Ellen – 1912, 13 mins A young nobleman disguises himself as a peasant and meets the lovely Ellen. They fall in love and are married. The young couple then travel the country to seek their fortune.

For Ireland’s Sake – 1914, 34 mins Set in the late 1790s, a depiction of Irish villagers rebelling against British occupation (Red Coats) over the right to bear arms.

The Colleen Bawn – 1911, 41 mins
A young Irish boy has fallen in love with a poor girl and wants to marry her, but his mother will stop at nothing, including murder, to see that he marries his rich cousin.

  • Ticket holders should arrive no later than 10 minutes prior to showtime to secure seats. 
  • Seating is limited to 16 people.
  • Popcorn is included!

Parking: Limited street parking is available on Robson and in the West End. Parking spots are scarce in the neighbourhood, so give yourself extra time or use public transportation. (Closest Skytrain station: Burrard. We are on the #5 Robson bus route).
